Dr. Clifford Carrol

Vishvinder Sharma, M.D.After graduating from Adelphi University in New York in 1983, Dr. Carrol attended medical school at the State University of New York at Buffalo. He completed Internal Medicine Residency and Chief Residency at Beth Israel Hospital in New York City and did one year of radiology residency at St. Vincents Hospital. Dr. Carrol then finished training in gastroenterology and hepatology at Stonybrook University Hospital in New York. The third year of this program focused on a procedure called Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography. He moved to Las Vegas in 1997, raised his three children here and continues to practice at Great West Medical Associates.

Dr. Carrol has an interest is quality measurements for endoscopic procedures. The most frequent procedure he performs is colonoscopy, a procedure that evaluates the colon for diseases and for identifying polyps. Since 2009, he has maintained quality benchmark information for colonoscopy at Stonecreek Surgical Center, the ambulatory surgery center where he previously performed outpatient procedures. Dr. Carrol has a polyp detection rate, or the percentage of procedures in which I find polyps, of 35 percent. This is above the standard of 15 to 25 percent considered to be a mark of excellence. His rate of finishing a colonoscopy completely is greater than 95 percent which is higher than the standard of 90 percent. These measurements are kept each month and are available for review at any time. It is very important that an endoscopist be able to provide this information for patients undergoing colonoscopy.

Dr. Carrol performs many other endoscopic procedures including capsule endoscopy, which looks at the small intestine using a pill sized camera that the patient swallows. He has interpreted more than 400 capsule endoscopy studies and was certified at the Cleveland Clinic. At Southern Hills Hospital, he performs a procedure called balloon assisted enteroscopy which evaluates and treats certain diseases of the small intestine. Recently, Dr. Carrol performed three special procedures called endoscopic fecal transplant for patients who have had a type of colitis called Clostridium difficile. These patients had tried all the usual antibiotics without success. All three patients responded and now have no evidence of the infection at all.

Dr. Carrol primarily sees outpatients at the group's office.
